The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any significant prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a clamor for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
