RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the US military conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
