Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
