Approximately 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.

Law enforcement report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.

The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they added.

Law enforcement then found numerous other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Officials report preliminary tests show the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.

"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; authorities are currently not aware of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they added.

City officials said they were working "to solve the case" and have requested to the community for information.

A high-ranking political figure said the attack left him stunned and needed to be solved rapidly.

"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he stated on social media, mentioning the murder of nine people by a shooter aiming at people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
